Take It Slow by Devin Michelle

I remember when I was three and Momma would take me to the city.
The lights were so bright.
Everything so pretty.
But soon enough we’d have to go.
Turn around in our little car and leave.
So I begged to my mommy with innocence and a pretty please.
Can we take the long way home?
Take it slow, I’m not ready to go.
I need a few extra minutes to breathe it in.
Sleep away and dream about going there again.
Oh please please, I don’t want to leave.
Take the long way, mommy please.
Wedding week and the honeymoons over.
Three days of bliss and no worry.
Sun blared so bright on the beach all the time.
Then suddenly now its time to leave.
Repack the bags and the ole weddin' dress.
With one last plea she turns and says pretty please.
Can we take the long way home?
Take it slow, I’m not ready to go.
I need a few extra minutes to breathe it in.
Sleep away and dream about going there again.
Oh please please, I don’t want to leave.
Take the long way, baby please.
Hospital beds so dank and scary.
Long battle going and an ending is nearing.
Too young to die but you know he’s ready.
It’s all in His hands now the angel says.
Looks up to the light and its time to leave.
Looks to his Holy Father and with a single pretty please
he says,
Lord, can I take the long way home?
Take it slow, I’m not ready to go.
I need a few extra minutes to breathe it in.
Sleep away and dream about going there again.
Oh please please, I don’t want to leave.
Take the long way, lord please.
When it’s time to go and you’re not ready to leave.
Kiss me on the cheek and tell me you love me.
When you’re gone I’ll say a tiny pretty please.
Take the long way.
Take the long way home.
